We are pleased to announce that filmmaker Ti West will join James Gunn, Tony Timpone, Roy Frumkes and Katha Cato on the panel at the 13th Annual TromaDance Film Festival, the only truly independent film festival that is completely FREE! The panel will be moderated by President of Troma and creator of The Toxic Avenger Lloyd Kaufman.

Ti West is best known as the writer and director of House of the Devil (2009), The Innkeepers (2011) and a segment of upcoming horror anthology V/H/S. This year the panel discussion will be extended to 90 minutes to accommodate all the talent and wisdom our guests have to impart on promoting and distributing movies, both historically and currently.

Two feature films have been selected to screen – the first, The FP, tells the story of two gangs locked in a turf war in rural wasteland FrasierPark, in the deadly arena of competitive dance-fight video game Beat-Beat Revolution. The FP is a fury of fierce footwork, triumphant montages and neon street wear. Also screening is Manborg, in which a soldier, brought back to life as a cyborg, fights alongside a band of adventurers against demon hordes in a dystopian future. These will screen along with thirty-six films already announced.

TromaDance will be held at Asbury Lanes in historic Asbury Park, New Jersey on May 4th and 5th. All TromaDance screenings are free and with the festival’s “No VIP Policy”, celebrities and fans are treated equally. Unlike mainstream, elitist festivals like Cannes and Sundance, TromaDance does not charge film makers anything to submit their films. As is the tradition, part of the TromaDance 2012 budget is funded by fans. This year the festival is being partially crowd-funded through Kickstarter, and the campaign has raised over $5000.

A recent entry posted on April, 2, 2012 on the blog High-Def Digest, written by Nate Boss, discussed the recent complaints that some fans may have concerning Blu-ray discs. such as exclusive distribution failures, inept packing, announcement teases/delays etc.

Part of the article even criticized Troma for not releasing all of our titles on Blu-ray. It was understood that the cost of releasing Blu-rays is expensive but for some reason the misapprehension was that we were unwilling to reach a deal with a company who could release more of our titles! We made sure to reply back that we would love to release more but are just unable to and asked if they had some suggestions for us. If the cost of releasing more Blu-ray discs interferes with being able to produce new movies, we’re sure our fans would agree that they’d rather us spend the money on making new films!

The following is an excerpt from High Def Digest:

“Troma, and how it’s apparently worth less than even Miramax – I absolutely love Lloyd Kaufman. The man is a hilarious writer and shrewd businessman responsible for some of the most tasteless cinema out there. However, when it comes to Blu-ray, I hate Kaufman and Troma. Due to the costs of Blu-ray production versus the low sales for the product that was released, when I asked the owner of the company on Twitter if we’d ever see more titles from them, like the much anticipated ‘Toxic Avenger’ films, I was told it was not likely to happen. Lots of other companies have seen their unviable product released on Blu-ray. Sony has Image release their lesser titles. 20th Century Fox has tapped Anchor Bay for their less-than-gems. Why can’t/won’t Kaufman reach some kind of deal with another company willing to release this product if they are unwilling? The trash/cult film market isn’t being ignored on Blu-ray, even if one of the greatest distributors of the genre is holding out.”

This was our response:

Dear Mr. Boss,

Thanks for your kind words about Troma, and your constructive criticism, in your article on High-Def Digest this past Monday. The reason we don’t release more films on blu-ray, as you mentioned, is because it’s expensive and the sales don’t always warrant the transfer.

Historically we have found it impossible to get our blu-ray titles into mainstream chain retailers. In fact we are economically blacklisted generally-not just home video. Even major Troma films like Trey Parker’s Cannibal! the Musical and Citizen Toxie have never played on any form of US television. This means that for Troma the choice comes down to losing money on blu-ray releases or producing new films – we aren’t in a position to do both. Based on the feedback we receive from audiences, new Troma movies have more appeal to our fans than more blu-ray releases.

We are licensing some of our titles to external companies, like the upcoming Mother’s Day, but if you have any suggestions or connections at other companies that do this, we’d be very grateful to hear them.

If you’d like to read the entire blog: http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Industry_Trends/High-Def_Retailing/Nate_Boss/Youre_Still_Doing_It_Wrong_More_Blu-ray_Blunders/9155

Troma Entertainment is proud to announce that Lloyd Kaufman, President of Troma and creator of The Toxic Avenger, will deliver a keynote address at Mediatech’s Packaged Media and Beyond conference in Las Vegas on April 20, 2012. Kaufman will also appear at the Las Vegas screening of Father’s Day that evening at Theatre 7.

The conference focuses on issues facing physical media and the ever-changing media landscape as digital media becomes part of daily life. As consumer media usage evolves, traditional media manufacturers like Troma are transforming their business models to find new revenue streams in the new media marketplace.

“When home video first came in, we saw the potential for the magic – being movie nuts ourselves. We immediately loved it and embraced it.” Remembers Kaufman of the home video revolution in the early 1980s. By that point, Troma had been in business for nearly 10 years and had accumulated a robust catalog for a renting public. “The Toxic Avenger was the first horror-type film, although it’s not really a horror film, to get VHS treatment. Vestron released it, and it was a huge success.” says Kaufman. “We understood that home video was a way to embrace our fans and for the fans to embrace us, and we got in ahead of the majors.”

Not surprisingly, Troma also jumped on DVD early. “Being movie nuts, we liked that we could do commentary tracks and put a humorous, interactive tour of the Troma film studios as a bonus extra to go along with the movie. We also went back and interviewed actors for featurettes. Unfortunately, we spent a fair amount on DVD before people actually had machines in their homes. It was pretty stupid, but at least we were there.”

Kaufman points out that Troma DVDs are all-region with no territory restrictions. “We want as many people to see our movies as possible, which will eventually pay off financially for us.”

Troma titles never were available in Blockbuster-owned stores, Kaufman notes, but they were in many of the chain’s franchisee outlets, which were able to determine their own stock. Troma titles are now available via Netflix, iTunes, Sony PSP, and Xbox, and there’s a dedicated Troma YouTube channel, which features daily updates.

Adapting to the digital age, Troma now streams its movies. In the same way that the MPAA opposed home video, the Hollywood movie studios’ association came out against Net Neutrality, a principle that advocates no restrictions by Internet service providers or governments on consumers’ access to the Internet. Kaufman is 100% on the other side of the issue. “We believe the business models are going to have to change. The big studios trying to squeeze every nickel out of the fans are making a mistake. We’re on the side of sharing our art.”

This officially licensed Toxic Avenger mask captures the lumpy, malformed majesty of Melvin the monster hero down to every disgusting detail and features a drooping realistic silicone left eye. (Remember to watch that depth perception, as it does cover your real left eye.)

Troma Entertainment is one of the longest running independent film studios in the U.S., cementing themselves as genre-defining game-changers of shock-and-awe cinema. From cult superhero classic The Toxic Avenger to the PETA-approved Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead, which satirizes something truly horrific—a fast-food fried chicken establishment—founder Lloyd Kaufman has no aversion to the bizarre and frightening. Stay tuned for a look at his latest blood-curdling vision, and enter the contest below for your chance to win a prize pack of autographed Troma Entertainment collectibles.

As the scene opens onto idyllic Sunny Acres Farms, the viewer can’t help but think how lovely this “Old McDonald”-style farm must be for all the happy little animals inside fattening up for slaughter. Pan to the crowded cages of screaming, drooling, terrified bodies, and suddenly it’s not such a wonderful world. Mothers scream as their young are ripped away from them. Animals are injected with antibiotics before having their throats slit. Of course, this is all done in accordance with “acceptable farming practices.” Horrified yet?

Troma Entertainment invites you to take a tour of Sunny Acres Farms, written and produced by Nina Gielen, and see for yourself who’s on your dinner plate…
